Facebook marketing: 5 tips for effective wall post writing

Facebook marketing

BuddyMedia has just released a data report with strategies on how to write effective Facebook page wall posts.

It is a statistical review of data and one of the most comprehensive data reports available to guide your Facebook wall publishing efforts.

I’ve downloaded the report and it has confirmed some of my own findings but also given me a surprise.

Check out the full report yourself or read on for my 5 Facebook page marketing take-aways:

1. Length

The longer the length of the wall post, the less engaging the wall post is. Posts of 80 characters or less are the most engaging.

This makes sense as we all know how people like to scan instead of read online and how they have short attention spans. Learn to edit yourself and keep it all short and simple!

2. URL’s

Engagement rates are 3 times higher for wall posts that use the full-lenght URL instead of the URL shortener like bit.ly. This finding is complete the opposite of the findings on Twitter so it really surprises me. The report has some ideas on why this is the case.

All in all it is worth experimenting with both and seeing what the results are on your own Facebook page.

3. Time of the day

Wall posts written in the early morning, at the finish of the work day and late at night have 20% higher engagement rates. More people are on Facebook outside of the business hours than during work, so make sure to think of the time of the day when publishing.

4. Tell fans what to do

Your fans will follow your instructions, and the simpler the instruction the better it is. Tell fans to “like” your post, or tell them to “comment” on your post. Tell users outright what you want, they will listen and your Facebook page will grow.

5. Ask questions

Ask questions. Also ask questions at the end of your wall post rather than at the beginning or middle. Posts that end with a question have a 15% higher engagement rate than posts with questions at the beginning or in the middle.
